There are so many different types of lead available, it can sometimes be a little confusing to choose which is best for you and your pooch! Here at Rudy & Lou, we have various types of leads available, including the popular Slip Lead, so we wanted to find out why so many pawrents opt for a Slip Lead over traditional trigger clip leads – read on to find out more!
Why choose a Slip Lead?
Slip Leads are a type of training lead designed to keep our four-legged friends safely at our side. To put it simply, Slip Leads are a piece of strong rope rung in a loop with a ring at the end which gently tightens around the dog’s neck if he pulls away. Some would say it is a lead and a collar all in one.
Slip Leads are designed to be worn loose most of the time, and only tighten if and when the dog pulls. Slip Leads are very popular in kennels and rescue centres, as they are escape-proof and easy to pop over a dog’s head, whereas collars and harnesses are not. Slip Leads are also perfect for working dog breeds, such as gundogs and herding dogs, as the quick release aspect enables the dog to be freed swiftly to do his job. That being said, Slip Leads prove to be useful and convenient leads for all dog breeds and their owners, and are often worn in addition to an everyday dog collar for daily walks.
Will a Slip Lead stop my dog from pulling?
As the dog pulls on the lead, the pressure of the lead becoming snug is designed to make the dog slightly uncomfortable, but should not cause any harm. This pressure discourages the dog from pulling on the lead. With enough consistent training, your dog will learn to walk calmly beside you.
If your dog consistently pulls on the lead, or even a traditional collar, and either gags or coughs, it is advisable to use another type of lead or a harness.
How do I put a Slip Lead on correctly?
The lead should be positioned over the dog’s head with the sliding ring nearest the owner’s leg, which should allow the ring to slide up and down freely. As the lead becomes slack the ring will drop freely under the dog’s chin.
What makes a quality Slip Lead?
Its important you opt for a quality lead for your dog that’s both durable and comfortable. Slip Leads should have a leather stopper to prevent over-tightening, and should be long enough to ensure a loose fit. In addition, quality soft, double braided, durable rope is imperative for maximum resistance.
